Humane Cat & Dog Euthanasia in Toledo, OH

Saying goodbye to your pet is one of the most difficult things for any pet parent to do, yet sometimes it is the most humane option. Cat and dog euthanasia can offer your pet a dignified end to their suffering. At Heatherdowns Veterinary Clinic, we recognize what a painful decision this is, and will do what we can to support you through this difficult time.

Deciding When It’s Time

Your pet cannot tell you when they’re ready to go, but there are some signs that suggest it may be time. Since you know your pet best of all, it is ultimately up to you to decide. Our veterinarians and staff are happy to help guide this decision with medical advice, but the final call is yours. Deciding when it’s time depends heavily on your pet’s quality of life, and whether or not they’re enjoying their golden years.

Here are some tips for recognizing when it’s time to say goodbye:

  • No longer eating or drinking
  • A change in personality, specifically depression and lack of interest in things they used to love
  • A lack of excitement when you come home; no longer rushing to greet you
  • Seeks out hiding places and does not interact with the family
  • Has no more interest in toys or games they used to enjoy
  • Signs of pain; pain medications are no longer providing effective relief
  • Has difficulty with simple movements such as sitting down or standing up
  • A general decline in health and happiness

The Euthanasia Process

When you and your family are ready to say goodbye, we’ll schedule a time for you to bring your pet to our hospital. We make sure to put you in a quiet room where you can spend your last few moments with your pet. Before administering the euthanasia, we’ll first give your pet a sedative to put them in a peaceful state of mind and eliminate any stress they may feel. Then, when you are ready, we’ll administer the euthanasia. The medicine works very quickly and your pet will not feel any pain.

Should you need us to handle care of the remains, please let us know prior to your appointment so we can make the necessary arrangements.
