Preventive Care & Pet Exams in Toledo, OH

At Heatherdowns Veterinary Clinic, we strive to enhance your pet’s well-being through preventive care. By preventing disease altogether, we ensure your cat or dog maintains a high quality of life from their puppy and kitten years, through their golden years. The cornerstone of our preventive services is annual pet exams. With regular veterinary visits, we’re better able to understand your pet’s health, become familiar with their baseline blood work, and more readily recognize subtle changes so we can provide treatment before things get worse.

What We'll Cover at Your Pet’s Exam

Every pet is unique. The veterinarian at Heatherdowns Veterinary Clinic in Toledo, OH will personalize each exam to suit your pet’s individual needs. However, there are some common services we perform! These include:

Physical exam and body condition score

We’ll examine your pet’s skin and coat, eyes, ears, nose, and mouth, as well as their heart and lungs to ensure there are no abnormalities. Additionally, we’ll check their weight and give them a body condition score which helps us determine whether or not they’re at a healthy weight.

Blood work

Blood work is a vital part of annual pet exams. Pets can’t tell us how they’re feeling, and physical exams are not enough to uncover problems. With blood work, we can discover any underlying conditions even before symptoms are present. This allows us to treat conditions long before they become a bigger (and more costly) problem.

Fecal exam and parasite prevention

We’ll run a fecal exam annually to check for any intestinal parasites and ensure your pet’s parasite prevention is working. We’ll also prescribe flea, tick, and heartworm prevention, which is essential all year-round — even during our cold winters! Fleas have a tendency to survive winters by hiding in your home. Ticks go dormant in very cold weather, but can be active if temperatures are as low as 35 degrees Fahrenheit! Mosquitoes, which carry heartworms, do die out in the winter, but their resurgence each spring is becoming harder to predict. Year-long parasite prevention protects your pet from these pests and the dangerous diseases they carry!
